About the Game

Asteroids is a video arcade game released in 1979 by Atari Inc.
It was one of the most popular and influential games of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. Asteroids uses vector graphics and a two-dimensional view that wraps around in both screen axes.

How it Works
The player controls a spaceship in an asteroid field which is periodically traversed by flying saucers. The object of the game is to shoot and destroy asteroids and saucers while not colliding with either, or being hit by the saucers' counter-fire.

Thought Bubble
Simple Controls – The player is limited to rotating left, rotating right, moving forward, and firing a laser. What other situations could be done with such simple controls? Perhaps a submarine underwater, a marble rolling on a flat surface, or maybe a boat navigating on the surface of a lake…

Split Targets – As the player accomplishes their goal of hitting the asteroids, the asteroids split into two smaller asteroids, which makes the targets smaller and more numerous, increasing the difficulty. What other ways might a task become more difficult as the player succeeds? Perhaps as a mountain climber ascends a mountain face the face becomes increasingly steep, an archery target which moves farther away as it is struck, or attempting to trap a moving ball into an increasingly smaller space.
