About
the Game
Donkey Kong is a successful and influential arcade game developed by
Nintendo, released in 1981. It is an early example of the platform
genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character
across a series of platforms while dodging obstacles.
How it Works
In it, Mario must rescue a damsel in distress, Pauline, from a giant
ape named Donkey Kong, maneuvering between moving platforms, dodging
barrels, fireballs, and other traps.
Thought Bubble
Damsel in Distress – Donkey Kong was the first game with the damsel
in distress scenario which has been using in such popular games a
Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, and countless others.
Double-edged power-ups – When Mario grabs a hammer he is able to
smash fireballs and barrels, but loses the ability to climb ladders.
How might power-ups in your game some times be detrimental to the
player? Weapons such as explosives might be harmful to the player if
not properly used, access cards might alert a security team to the
location of the player, or perhaps a speed boost might adversely
effect the player’s ability to steer as accurately.
